A Reflection on Past Reflections
It has been over two years since the December 2020 blog. We continued finding ways of surviving through the pandemic and political upheaval. This may be an appropriate time to reflect on a short passage from that last blog which was aptly named “A Time for Reflection”:
In 2019 one expected the year 2020 to live up to the phrase alluding to clarity of sight. Alas a virus of another sort got in our eyes and clouded our vision. A virus that distorted our view of reality. The poison that emanated from the minds of those who chose to divide us for their own political and ideological gains, turned citizens against each other in a manner that has prolonged social and economic discord.

The year 2021 should prove to be a transition year as COVID-19 goes the way of polio, TB and other scourges in human history. While some industries may never fully return due to the meteoric rise of all things internet, some activities such as travelling should return by 2022. Some things just cannot be replaced by a computer or TV screen. Patrons will return to restaurants, travellers will fly and take cruises.

Trying Times
The Covid-19 pandemic is our Flu of 1918. People of the 22nd century, will look back on these times as The Virus of 2020. From governments and researchers to businesses of all sizes and their customers, all right thinking people are trying desperately to limit and possibly eradicate this virus.
The pharmaceutical industry of course is at the forefront of developing antidotes and vaccines. Health care providers are stretched to the limit trying to save lives and ease suffering at great personal risk.
Another group playing its part to understand and address this phenomenon we are facing is the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis economists. These social scientists have developed a model which could well play a role in guiding society in a manner that could go a long way toward virus mitigation while minimizing economic costs. For those so inclined there is an article by Douglas Clement, managing editor at the Minneapolis Fed, which may be seen here.

Investor Alert for Seniors: Five Red Flags of Investment Fraud
The article you are about to read deals with the timeless dilemma that investors face: Trusting an investment adviser because you think you know the person or company well. That person could be a member of your church or fraternity. It could even be a company that has been advertising on television and radio for years. This alert was dated June 15, 2015, but is equally pertinent to all decades past and present. For instance, the SEC filed a complaint May 20, 2020 against Paul Horton Smith, Sr. and his various entities. The SEC alleges that:

Covid-19
Our governments should have taken action at least three years ago regarding a looming pandemic threat. Even in January of this year the US Government was warned at the highest levels. But not enough it appears, was done. America was and still is, consumed by an ideological divide that threatens its democracy. On the other side of the pond Europe and the UK were engaged in the exhausting Brexit divorce. Most likely the lack of planning and cohesion among governments has led to the reality we now face, that Covid-19 may persist for many winters to come if the experts are correct.
There is a great deal of advice from qualified health experts, so there is no need to address medical issues dealing with survival in this blog. Instead, let's look at a few devil-is-in-the details concerns that may impact your finances.
